I wasn’t pleased with the odd placement of the fingers when I was drawing the sketch, but I wanted a challenge to improve my hand sketches. Learn from the masters. In Self-portraits: from the fifteenth century to the present day by Angus Malcolm there is a self portrait of Reubens with his wife. When I saw the painting today, I exclaimed, “That’s the hand I drew!” or something like it. And now I know that all my hand needed was a sword hilt to rest on (and to be looked at upside down).
